Conference Ageing and Disability - disabled people are ageing, ageing people are getting disabled,
Graz, 8 - 9 June 2006

The European Association of Service Providers for Persons with Disabilities (EASPD) represents more than 7000 service providers in Europe and champions the equalisation of opportunities for people with disabilities through effective systems for providing high-quality services.

The EASPD conference in Graz will have the following aims:

  • addressing the future situation regarding disability and ageing and identifying different needs;

  • identifying the current status regarding accessibility, availability and affordability of services with regard to ageing and disability;

  • discussion of the question how to develop services taking into account the quality of life and different needs in the future;

  • highlighting "good practices" with a view to developing adequate services;

  • identifying shortcomings regarding legal frameworks, financing and acceptance of public and new professional services types;

  • effects of the latest political developments at European level (Green Paper on demographic change, discussion on social services of general interest, approaches to social protection, anti-discrimination directive, services directive);

  • new challenges regarding the instruction and training of staff;

  • presentation and description of the needs of specific groups of the population;

  • paying special attention to poverty, fragility and "gender issues";

  • specific role of families.

Based on the results of previous project work founded on research and against the background of European examples of best practices, strategies for necessary political and legal changes as well as for developing new services within organisations of the disabled are to be formulated in a Graz Declaration.

The conference will be an opportunity to give prominence to European social policies on disability issues in the framework of the EU Council Presidency.
