Fifth European Meeting of People Experiencing Poverty –
co-financed by the European Commission,
Brussels, 12 – 13 May 2006

The first European meeting of people experiencing poverty was held in December 2001 at the initiative of Belgium. The meeting took place in the framework of applying the Open Method of Coordination (OMC) to combat poverty and social exclusion. One of the aims of the OMC is to activate all stakeholders and to involve those affected. Since 2003 all Presidencies of the first half-year have organised meetings of this kind. Austria will continue this tradition in the first half of 2006.

The events have the following general objectives:

·        exchanging experience;

·        promoting dialogue between people with experience in poverty, NGOs and representatives of European institutions;

·        promoting the involvement of people with experience in poverty in the development of National Action Plans;

·        making a contribution to the strategy of social inclusion at European level.

The meeting during the Austrian Presidency will be dedicated to the subject "How do we cope with every day life?". The focus will be on the question how to cope with every-day life with an income corresponding to the respective national risk-of-poverty threshold. The aim of the meeting is to continue and intensify the dialogue between those affected.
