28 June 2006 – Council President Ursula Haubner: "Youth in Action" programme adopted

Support for programmes in the area of youth, citizen participation, culture and consumer protection is one of the pillars of the European Union. The "Youth in Action" programme, which was negotiated under the chairmanship of Youth Minister Ursula Haubner, was adopted unanimously by the Council yesterday in Luxembourg.

08 June 2006 – Dolinschek opens conference on "Ageing and Disability"

Sigisbert Dolinschek, State Secretary for Social Security, Generations and Consumer Protection today opened the "Ageing and Disability" conference which is taking place in the Graz trade fair centre under the auspices of the Austrian Presidency of the EU.

01 June 2006 – Haubner brokers Council agreement on improved insurance cover for mobile workers

At the very outset, the Austrian Presidency set itself the goal of improving insurance cover. Today, companies send their workers to locations all over the EU. However, this mobility should not have a negative impact on employees’ health, accident and retirement insurance. At today’s formal meeting of the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council in Luxembourg, its President Ursula Haubner was able to achieve significant progress.

12 May 2006 – Haubner: EU is also confronted with poverty

Ursula Haubner had a meeting in Brussels today in her capacity as Council Presidency with people in the EU afflicted by poverty. "I am convinced the European Union needs to be in direct touch with the living conditions of its citizens, particularly those living in poverty and social exclusion", Haubner said, "for it is the the people concerned who have real competence in the matter, and so they must be involved as a positive force in the decision-making process."

02 May 2006 – Haubner: "Where have all the children gone?"

The Austrian President of the Council, Ursula Haubner, is hosting a high-level conference of European experts - l’Europe de l’enfance - in Vienna. "Children and young people are key to Europe’s future. They therefore have a correspondingly high priority for our Council Presidency", Haubner stressed.

31 March 2006 - Haubner on EU Youth Ministers’ meeting: positive outcome

Ursula Haubner, Youth Minister and President of the Youth Council, said today that the meeting of EU Youth Ministers in Bad Ischl had produced positive results: "It is all about jobs, education and equal opportunities for our young people. More specifically, it is about the active implementation of the European Youth Pact. For young people need prospects! The Youth Event 2006 can rightly be described as a turning point in European youth policy, as for the first time young people and ministers discussed the issues together and also drew practical conclusions. Europe has a future; we are implementing our objectives with young people for young people. Bad Ischl has shown that the objectives can be achieved only if we act together. The Youth Ministers’ meeting was a success, as the initial findings from today’s evaluation sessions by the youth delegates show. The joint Bad Ischl conclusions will be direct input for the next Council meeting of Youth Ministers in May", Haubner said.

30 March 2006 – Meeting of EU Youth Ministers – Dolinschek: Creating basic conditions for youth to meet their needs

"Young people have many opportunities in today’s world, but they also face new kinds of social and economic burdens and risks. Because of the increased demands, it is necessary to support precisely those young people who, for various reasons, are unable to achieve social integration and are in danger of being marginalised", State Secretary for Social Security, Generations, and Consumer Protection Sigisbert Dolinschek said in his speech at the working session of Youth Ministers in Bad Ischl.

28 March 2006 – Haubner on meeting of Youth Ministers: treat young people as social partners

"We must ensure what is happening in France does not happen again", Sigisbert Dolinschek, the State Secretary for Social Affairs, said on Tuesday in the run-up to the Youth Ministers Informal and in light of the continuing protests with which young people in France are resisting the planned labour market reform. The Minister, Ursula Haubner, spelt out what she thinks should be done: "We must treat young people as social partners".

"We’re talking about jobs, education, training and equal opportunities for our young people. 24 February 2006 – Dolinschek, Austrian Secretary of State, Opened a Conference on "Effective Legal Redress - the Consumer Protection Instruments of Actions for Injunction and Group Damages Actions" in Vienna

"To have rights and to exercise rights may be two sides of the same coin. Consumer policy must turn towards both sides of this question. What may excellent protection laws help, if they are not sticked to every day life by traders and if consumers refrain from court actions being afraid of the possible risks and costs," said the Secretary of State responsible for consumer protection, Sigisbert Dolinschek, at the opening of the Conference on "Effective Legal Redress - the Consumer Protection Instruments of Actions for Injunction and Group Damages Actions".

The international conference "Demographic Challenges – Family needs Partnership" in Vienna ended on Saturday. Under the chairmanship of Social Security Minister Haubner, the demographic challenges which Europe faces were discussed by political, employee and employer representatives and non-governmental organisations from 33 countries.

24 January 2006 – Haubner: Policy for young people must involve youngsters

Austria’s Minister for Generations Ursula Haubner today met the chair of the Culture and Education Committee of the European Parliament (CULT) Nikolaos Sifunakis in the run-up to the committee meeting. They agreed on the need to continue the joint work to raise awareness of youth issues.

"Young people must be offered long-term prospects for a career and their place in society," Council President Haubner subsequently told the committee.

21 January 2006 – Informal EPSCO Council Meeting in Villach: Presidency Conclusions

The discussions about the social dimension of the new Lisbon strategy for growth and employment were based on the Commission Communication on a new framework for the open method of coordination of social protection and inclusion policies in the European Union and a discussion paper of the Presidency.

20 January 2006 – Haubner: The social dimension must be further strengthened

Council President and Minister for Social Security, Ursula Haubner, outlined the following today during the concluding Presidency press conference of the informal meeting of the Ministers for Employment and Social Affairs: "We are in agreement that the social dimension must be further strengthened.  This is also an important step for bolstering confidence in the EU."  Thus in parallel to the promotion of employment it was also necessary to have a policy for those who are on the fringes of society.

12 January 2006 – Announcement of the Informal Meeting of the Employment and Social Ministers in Villach

On invitation of Minister Ursula Haubner and Minister Martin Bartenstein the Informal Meeting of the Employment and Social Ministers takes place from the 19 to 21 January 2006 in Villach. The topic of the Meeting is "FLEXICURITY – Flexibility through Security. For a SOCIAL EUROPE".
On the first day the EU-Troika will meet with representatives of the European Parliament, the European Social Partners and the Social Platform.
On the second day the Ministers of the Member States, the Applicant Countries and EFTA-States will discuss the social dimension of the partnership for growth and jobs as well as labour models, which do justice to both necessary flexibility and social security.
